Biography
Annadurdy Myradalyyev was born in 1952 and lives and works in Mary, Turkmenistan. From 1966 to 1971, he studied at the Turkmen State Art College. He became a member of the Union of Artists of Turkmenistan in 1977, received the title of Merited Art Worker of Turkmenistan in 1991 and was named People’s Artist of Turkmenistan in 2011. Over the course of his career, Myradalyyev has developed a distinctive and easily recognizable artistic language. His paintings move between figurative art and abstraction, often focusing on people, rural life, family and human relationships. Years of experimentation led him towards a restrained palette, unconventional compositions and imagery that is often symbolic rather than literally descriptive. His work also reflects an interest in the experimental traditions of modern European painting, including Impressionism and the Russian avant-garde. Myradalyyev is closely associated with the development of the Mary school of painting, known for its individual approaches to colour, form and the interpretation of everyday life. State publications describe him as one of the leading figures of this artistic tradition. In 2022, a major solo exhibition in Ashgabat marking his 70th anniversary presented around 120 paintings and demonstrated the breadth of his long artistic career. His work has also been presented internationally. In 2016, Myradalyyev received a bronze medal at an international exhibition in Tajikistan and took part in a group exhibition at the Zurab Tsereteli Art Gallery in Moscow. In 2019, he presented a solo exhibition created for the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts at Near East University and received the institution’s Silver Key Honor Award. He continues to participate in exhibitions and remains an active figure in contemporary Turkmen art.
