Biography
Kossekmyrat Nurmyradov was born in 1951 in the Mary Region of Turkmenistan. From 1975 to 1982, he studied at the Tashkent Theatre and Art Institute named after A. N. Ostrovsky, one of the major centres of academic art education in Central Asia. He became a member of the Union of Artists of Turkmenistan in 1988. Nurmyradow developed a highly individual artistic language rooted in the traditions of Oriental miniature painting and Turkmen folk culture. His works often depict scenes of everyday life, customs, legends and collective memory through vivid colour, stylised figures and symbolic compositions. Elements of primitivism and decorative painting are combined with narrative imagery, giving his works an immediately recognizable character. His first solo exhibition in Moscow took place in 1982. Decades later, his works were again presented in Moscow at the Zurab Tsereteli Art Gallery of the Russian Academy of Arts, where his distinctive artistic language received recognition from Zurab Tsereteli. Nurmyradow’s paintings have also entered private collections and galleries in Europe, the Middle East and the United States. Nurmyradow is closely associated with the artistic school of Mary and remains one of its most recognizable representatives. His work has influenced the development of the regional painting tradition, while he continues to participate in major exhibitions in Turkmenistan. In 2024 and 2026, his works were again included in national exhibitions presenting leading artists of the country.
