Dovran Hydyrov (born 1977) is a Turkmen painter whose artistic practice is deeply connected to the mountainous landscapes of his homeland. Based in Balkanabat, he developed his fascination with nature through journeys across Turkmenistan's mountain regions alongside his father, the painter Amangeldi Hydyrov. Hydyrov's distinctive technique is characterised by his expressive use of the palette knife. Applying paint directly from the palette onto the canvas, he builds richly textured surfaces in which bold strokes, layered colours and sculptural forms convey the physical presence of mountains. Human figures are generally absent from his landscapes. Instead, the mountains and the sky become the central protagonists. Monumental rock formations are often set against dramatic, restless skies, creating a powerful contrast between the permanence of the earth and the changing atmosphere above it. An important dimension of Hydyrov's work is his engagement with the sacred geography of Turkmenistan. Several of his paintings are associated with spiritually significant sites, including Gözli Ata, Idris Baba and Parawbibi. Through these subjects, the artist explores the relationship between natural beauty, cultural memory and the spiritual heritage of his country. Alongside his artistic career, Hydyrov has devoted more than two decades to art education at the Children's Art School in Balkanabat, where his own artistic journey began. His commitment to teaching reflects a continuing connection between generations of Turkmen artists. Since 2010, Hydyrov has been a member of the Union of Artists. His work represents a distinctive approach to contemporary Turkmen landscape painting, combining expressive technique with a profound appreciation of the country's natural and cultural heritage.
